Apple demanded a widow provide a court order before they allowed her to recover her deceased husband’s Apple ID password to access his iPad.
Many aspects of our lives have shifted into the digital realm and very few really digest the contracts we are required to accept in order to access digital accounts. A deceased person’s personal representative for all intents and purposes should have access to all of the decedent’s assets, accounts and records; however, such right of access is not recognized by digital services.
As a precaution, talk to your estate planning attorney to insure any account you want your personal representative to have access to is accounted for in your estate plan.
